At high temperatures, atoms or ions in the ground state transition to an excited state, and when atoms in the excited state return to the ground state, they emit light of different wavelengths. The wavelength of the emission spectrum is related to specific elements, and the intensity of the spectrum is related to concentration. The 5100 MP analysis is based on this principle.
